Friends of May

Friends of May pairs community members and volunteers for one-on-one visiting, household support, and connection.

This program connects passionate volunteers with community members looking to share knowledge, experiences, activism, companionship, and fun, as well as practical supports. Help around the house, accompaniment on a scheduled visit or outing, or a shared passion for cooking, gardening, or movies can all be nurtured through Friends of May.

Friends of May is named after one of our longest serving volunteers, May McQueen. She spent over two decades with us, saying, “Everybody needs to know that somebody gives a damn, and that’s what we’re for.” This program is a new take on past programs known as the Buddy Program and Care Teams.

For years, May shared a special bond with one of our clients. Together, they enjoyed peaceful walks in Stanley Park and shared a love of classical music. A friend of Vancouver’s HIV/AIDS community, we are proud to honour her legacy of compassion with Friends of May.
