The Kenneth Lackner Scholarship is now closed. This scholarship provides funding for education at a recognized, Canadian postsecondary education institution

Kenneth Lackner worked as a bookkeeping assistant when Ribbon Community was AIDS Vancouver. When he died in 2017, Kenneth generously gifted AIDS Vancouver funds for this scholarship. We are grateful to Kenneth for making this scholarship possible, and all his contributions.

This scholarship was initially administered by the LOUD Foundation. In 2023, AIDS Vancouver began administering the scholarship independently.

Eligibility

This scholarship provides funding for education at a recognized, Canadian postsecondary education institution. To receive the scholarship, individuals must be able to confirm one of the following:

  • Current enrollment in a recognized, Canadian postsecondary education institution
  • Studies completed at a recognized, Canadian postsecondary education institution between February 1, 2024 and March 23, 2025
  • Or a confirmed spot in a program at a recognized, Canadian postsecondary education institution with a start date between February 1, 2025 and September 30, 2025

This scholarship is open to people with a valid Social Insurance Number who are:

  • a Ribbon Community clients and their families (HIV-positive and HIV-negative),
  • a Ribbon Community volunteers,
  • living with HIV [confirmation of status required] who live in our communities

Scholarship recipients will only be confirmed once we receive documentation of the eligibility criteria above, as well as the information required to issue at T4A.

Documentation does not need to be provided at the time of application.

Current Ribbon Community staff members and Board members are not eligible.

Privacy & Confidentiality

This information will only be shared with the Kenneth Lackner Scholarship Committee, made up of members of the Ribbon Community Board. Information will be kept confidential for the duration of the application and decision process. Unsuccessful applications will be destroyed after completion of the process.

We awarded two Kenneth Lackner Scholarships of $2,500 in March 2024.

This scholarship is typically offered once per year.
